Photon Arts!
One of the special characteristics in the battle system that you will come across is a feature called Photon Arts (PA).
This is the notion that characters can ‘learn’ techniques and these can then be linked to weapons in order to activate them. To put it simply, they are special attacks you can freely equip your weapons with from one PA to another, and enhance them as well.
Specifically, when the Photon Arts of combat weapons ‘skills’ are raised, the character jumps and leaps, and pulls off flashy special actions that do not seem like they are from an online title.
Since there are so many types, you will be at a loss to choose your favourite ones.
The reason we created Photon Arts was that we wanted to motivate the player to strive to use, and improve, whatever techniques they have! Among them there are many funny ones that we think you won’t be able to stop laughing at!
In Phantasy Star Online (PSO), the actions of the player did not change even though they were equipped with weapons that were at a high level. We basically thought we would like you to have a feeling almost as if, ‘I want to move like that player!’ By making motions change gradually we hoped to improve the feeling that these moves were earned.
Not only are Photon Arts eye-catching but it is essential to decide when and where to use which ones. They have a tactical importance too! The more you use PA, the more powerful and impressive they grow to be. So there is another tough, but fun challenge ahead of you in working out which PA you are going to upgrade next!

Although I'm sure this sounds like an odd comment, but if the Photon Arts can be channelled through a weapon, does that mean someday there will be a photon art failure? Like selecting a photon art for a weapon that is too big and heavy for that skill. such as a quick combat Melee and using a spear instead?
Photon Arts is a wonderful addition to the PS game. I couldn't tell you how many times it has saved me while being stuck in a pickle. They are quite amazing to see, though I must admit, none of mine are over the top yet. I'm hoping to see them soon.
I really do enjoy the photon arts. Sure beats the regular, hard, special attack of the last game. Alhough... the effects that some weapons had in the last game are classic, like the BONG! of Akiko's Frying Pan or the Hearts on the rare wand or the Roses weapon...
I hope there are nice unique and characteristic weapons in PSU as well, hopefully with the addition of a few favorites...
wow ... can't wait to buy my guardian licence online ^^ ... talking of that, when will it be avaliable to purchase online ? o.O ?
I'm LOVING the dagger PA! if you don't lock onto a monster, you can swing around behind him during the move. all the hits might not land, but it is doable and you can avoid the monster hitting you. I'm dying for better moves with the double-dagger -- the one it has now isn't remotely as useful as the single dagger. so please release more stuff for those of us outside Japan!
The photon arts are awesome and all, but does anyone have information on when the update patch will come for the US version of PSU, and when it does come will it be up to date with the japanese servers?
That's nice. But it'd be cool to see some content.
